Fighting has intensified between the Israeli military and Hamas militants in Gaza. The Israeli Defense Forces conducted an airstrike on a prominent high-rise building in Gaza City on Saturday. The bombing leveled the structure which had housed several media outlets including the Associated Press and Al Jazeera. CBS News Foreign Correspondent, Imtiaz Tyab joins from Tel Aviv to discuss the escalating violence.

BERLIN: Pro-palästinensische Demonstration schlägt in Gewalt um - Polizei setzt Pfefferspray ein
Unter dem Eindruck der wachsenden Gewalt im Nahen Osten sind am Samstag in zahlreichen deutschen Städten Menschen auf die Straße gegangen, um gegen das Vorgehen Israels zu protestieren und ihre Solidarität mit den Palästinensern zu bekunden. Zugleich gab es vielerorts aber auch kleinere Solidaritätskundgebungen für die israelische Bevölkerung. Bei mehreren propalästinensischen Demonstrationen kam es zu Zwischenfällen, vereinzelt auch zu Ausschreitungen.
In Berlin schlugen Demonstranten auf Polizeibeamte ein und bewarfen sie mit Steinen und Flaschen. Auch Feuerwerkskörper wurden geschleudert. Die Polizei setzte Pfefferspray ein. Nach ihren Angaben gab es Verletzte und Festnahmen, konkrete Zahlen nannte ein Polizeisprecher zunächst nicht.
Die Berliner Polizei hatte die Protestaktion zunächst wegen Verstößen gegen die Corona-Hygieneregeln für aufgelöst erklärt. Da sich Demonstrationsteilnehmer aber nicht an die Anordnung hielten, gingen die Beamten im Stadtteil Neukölln gegen sie vor. Aus der Menge heraus wurden Rufe wie «Kindermörder Israel», «Frauenmörder Israel» und «Free Palestine» laut.
Insgesamt waren am Samstag drei pro-palästinensische Demonstrationen in Berlin angemeldet. Am Nachmittag zogen nach Polizeiangaben rund 2500 Menschen vom Oranienplatz zum Hermannplatz. Eine Demonstration mit rund 120 Teilnehmern am Mittag vom Hermannplatz zum Rathaus Neukölln war friedlich verlaufen. Im Laufe des Nachmittags verstärkte die Polizei ihre Einsatzkräfte von 360 auf 600 Beamte.
Hintergrund der Kundgebungen war neben der aktuellen Eskalation im Nahen Osten vielerorts auch der Tag der Nakba (Katastrophe). Jährlich gedenken Palästinenser am 15. Mai der Vertreibung und Flucht Hunderttausender Araber im Zuge der israelischen Staatsgründung 1948.
Der Konflikt zwischen Israel und der im Gazastreifen herrschenden Hamas war zu Wochenbeginn eskaliert. Militante Palästinenser beschießen Israel fortwährend mit Raketen - nach Angaben der israelischen Armee waren es zuletzt bereits rund 2300. Israel reagiert mit massiven Angriffen in dem Küstengebiet.
Die Stimmung zwischen Israelis und Arabern aus dem Nahen Osten ist auch vielerorts in Deutschland aufgeheizt. In mehreren deutschen Städten war es in den vergangenen Tagen zu Angriffen auf Synagogen und zu antisemitischen Vorfällen gekommen.
Politiker und Vertreter religiöser Gemeinden verurteilten die Angriffe auf Synagogen und die anti-jüdischen Parolen scharf. Bundesjustizministerin Christine Lambrecht rief dazu auf, sich an die Seite Israels zu stellen. «Wir alle sind aufgefordert, klare Position zu beziehen, wenn Jüdinnen und Juden angegriffen werden - sei es im Netz oder im realen Leben», sagte die SPD-Politikerin den Zeitungen der Funke Mediengruppe (Samstag).
Auch Vertreter von muslimischen Gemeinden fanden am Samstag deutliche Worte. Der Vorsitzende des Zentralrats der Muslime in Deutschland, Aiman Mazyek, verurteilte die jüngste Gewalt gegen Synagogen. «Wer unter dem Vorwand von Kritik an Israel Synagogen und Juden angreift, hat jedes Recht auf Solidarität verwirkt», erklärte er in der «Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung». Die «widerlichen Attacken auf unsere jüdischen Mitbürger» in den letzten Tagen verurteile er entschieden.
«Wer Rassismus beklagt, selbst aber antisemitischen Hass verbreitet, verliert alle Glaubwürdigkeit und muss mit meinem entschiedenen Widerstand rechnen», schrieb Mazyek.
Zuvor hatte bereits der Vorsitzende des Bundeszuwanderungs- und Integrationsrats (BZI), Memet Kilic, den offenen Antisemitismus scharf kritisiert. Die Meinungs- und Versammlungsfreiheit, die in Deutschland garantiert sei, sei kein «Freiticket für antisemitische Hassrede und Gewalt», sagte Kilic.
Gleichzeitig wies Kilic darauf hin, dass im Zusammenhang mit dem Nahost-Konflikt auch die Stimmung gegenüber Muslimen und Migranten «rauer und rücksichtloser» geworden sei. Der Nahost-Konflikt dürfe keinen «Alibi-Raum für gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit und Übergriffe» auf Migrantinnen und Migranten bieten, warnte er und appellierte an alle Seiten, demokratische Grundwerte zu wahren.

Gaza was hit by fresh Israeli air strikes Saturday morning, with the blast leaving a large plume of smoke billowing over the Gaza City skyline.
👉Israeli war planes carried out airstrikes on Gaza early Saturday, and Hamas militants responded by firing rockets into Israel, as the violence between the two sides continued for a fifth night.
One airstrike killed at least 10 Palestinians, including children. Another strike killed at least two people, Palestinian health officials said.
Tensions were further heightened Saturday as Palestinians marked Nakba Day or Day of the Catastrophe, commemorating the destruction of the Palestinian homeland in 1948 for the creation of Israel.
Violence increased Friday between Israelis and Palestinians, with fighting erupting in the West Bank along with the aerial bombardment in Gaza and unrest by Arabs within Israel.
Across the West Bank, hundreds of Palestinians clashed with Israeli police, throwing stones and burning tires, in the largest protests in the region in several years.
Since the fighting began five days ago, at least 134 Palestinians have been killed, including at least 32 children and 11 women, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which added that 900 people have been wounded. Eight Israelis have been killed in the rocket attacks, including a 6-year-old boy.

A building that has housed international media offices including Al Jazeera’s in the Gaza Strip was hit by an Israeli air strike that totally demolished the structure.
It was not immediately clear if there were casualties in the attack. Images showed the building crashing to the ground after being bombed as dust and debris flew into into air.
Residents of the building, which also houses The Associated Press bureau, had been warned of the strike an hour prior.
The building also contained a number of apartments and other offices.
