My impressions and hypothesis: Leon Trotsky was the agent of the Russian Military Intelligence before WWI.  His second wife Natalia Sedova was a daughter of Tsarist general, well known at that time Arctic explorer, according to some sources.  Trotsky, inspired by the Revolution of 1905, was behind the start of the WWI: his agitation and  secret  organizing led to the actions of   Gavrilo Princip ,  " who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife Sophie."  The German Abwehr hated Trotsky, blaming him for their loss in WWI. It was them who were behind Raymon Mercader , the Trotsky's assassin, not the hapless Stalin's NKVD.  " Abwehr  operatives acted as lookouts for the Soviet team that finally killed Trotsky in August of 1940. I believe more and more that one of the central secret agreements of the Non-aggression Pact was the joint work on assassination of Trotsky.  NKVD alone did not dare or was blocked from this.
