Chechen singer Zelimkhan Bakaev, who disappeared without a trace in 2017, was apparently killed by law enforcement officers. This is stated in the investigation of the Crisis Group "SK SOS".
Bakaev was under surveillance due to suspicion of homosexuality, human rights activists are sure. The singer spent most of his time in Moscow and did not believe that he could be killed. Bakaev remained in Russia because of the need to care for his sick mother.
According to the interlocutor of the organization, his former partner could have reported on Bakaev. He also lived in Moscow and had connections with law enforcement agencies in Chechnya.
When information about Bakaev's homosexuality reached the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, he allegedly ordered to "deal with" him. Kadyrov was personally acquainted with the singer, shook hands with him and considered homosexuality a personal insult, according to SK SOS.
According to human rights activists, the artist was tortured for a long time before his death. The Chechen authorities denied their involvement in the disappearance of Bakaev, and human rights activists linked his disappearance with a "hunt for gays." The authors of the investigation are sure that the body of the singer was handed over to the family.

- On September 24, 2017, the ChGTRK Grozny published information on its website that Bakaev was in Germany. As evidence, the website of the state channel posted a video with the singer. In this video of Bakaev, who allegedly left for another country, journalists found furniture and a drink sold only in Russia. Also, human rights activists received a response from the European Commission, which confirmed that the singer did not enter Europe.

Чеченский певец Зелимхан Бакаев, который бесследно пропал в 2017 году, вероятно, был убит сотрудниками правоохранительных органов. Об этом говорится в расследовании Кризисной группы "СК SOS".
За Бакаевым вели слежку из-за подозрения в гомосексуальности, уверены правозащитники. Певец большую часть времени проводил в Москве и не верил, что его могут убить. Бакаев оставался в России из-за необходимости ухаживать за больной матерью.

По данным правозащитников, перед смертью артиста долго пытали. Чеченские власти отрицали свою причастностью к исчезновению Бакаева, а правозащитники связывали его пропажу с "охотой на геев". Авторы расследования уверены, что тело певца передали семье.
