Doctors at Berlins Charité hospital said that the Russian opposition leaders condition had improved, but they could not rule out lasting effects of a severe poisoning from a military-grade nerve agent.
Staunton, September 6 Because public trust in the authorities is so low, most Russians dont trust anything the powers that be are now saying about the pandemic including that the country wont get a second wave, that schooling wont be shifted to distance learning, and that life in Russia will soon return to what it was before the coronavirus arrived (regnum.ru/news/3055218.html and ura.news/articles/1036281016).
Instead, officials find themselves in a situation where people are drawing their own conclusions, such as seeing each uptick in number of infections as heralding a new wave of the pandemic or even viewing assurances by Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin about the future as efforts to distract the population.
Russian officials are spending ever more time denying rumors: Officials in Udmurtia have strenuously denied that orders came from above for them to underreport coronavirus deaths (regnum.ru/news/3055227.html), and Sobyanin is begging Russians not to believe that distance learning is about to return (newsru.com/russia/06sep2020/sobyaninrumours.html).
Meanwhile, the pandemic continues to ebb and flow across the country, allowing re-openings in some places and new closures in others (regnum.ru/news/society/3051649.html). The official figures for the last 24 hours are 5195 new infections and 61 additional deaths, bringing those totals respectively to 1,025,505 and 17,820 (t.me/COVID2019_official/1435).
A new law entering into force will allow the increasing number of people who are headed to bankruptcy but owe no more than 500,000 rubles (7,000 US dollars) to do so without going to court. Some fear that in the absence of a judicial finding, such people may be at risk in the future (krizis-kopilka.ru/archives/79800).
Sports officials are suggesting that the pandemic has underscored the importance of isolated sports training officials so that any infections will not undermine Russia as a sports power (regnum.ru/news/3055148.html).
Maria Kolesnikova, a leading member of Belarus opposition, was reportedly seized by unidentified men in Minsk on Monday as demonstrations against President Alexander Lukashenko entered their fifth straight week.
A witness identified as Anastasia told Belarusian website Tut.by Monday that she saw Kolesnikova being forced by men in civilian clothing into a minibus and driven away.
Kolesnikova is the last of three women left inside Belarus who came together in the opposition coordination council to try and defeat Lukashenko in the August 9th poll. He was declared winner in the election but opposition parties, along with the United States and the European Union, say the poll was heavily rigged.
Kolesnikovas ally Olga Kovalkova went to Poland Saturday, saying authorities forced her out of the country, while Belarus main opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has been in Lithuania with her children since the election for what she says is her own safety.
In an interview with VOA, Tsikhanouskaya said she is working to organize new elections despite Lukashenkos refusal to do so.
Our plan is absolutely clear. It's organization of new elections, fair and transparent, she said.
Protests over the weekend once again drew tens of thousands of people, shouting go away and youre a rat, members of the crowd waved red and white opposition flags.
Large Protests Against Belarus Lukashenko Persist
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets Sunday across Belarus calling for Lukashenko to resign
Police and army troops cordoned off the center of Minsk, but it did not stop demonstrators from marching to the vicinity of the presidents residence, about three kilometers outside the city center.
Using military vehicles and water cannons, as well as pepper gas, riot police and plain clothes officers wearing masks and wielding truncheons tried to disperse the demonstrators.
More than 200 protesters were detained throughout Belarus Sunday, including more than 100 in the capital, the Minsk-based Viasna Human Rights Center and local media reported.
More than 7,000 protesters have been arrested, and widespread evidence of abuse and torture has been reported in the month of protests. At least four people are reported to have died during the demonstrations.
The UK government has imposed a mid-October deadline for reaching a trade deal with the EU, while downplaying reports it plans to override divorce deal terms on Northern Ireland.

The chatter that began among these groups over the summer primarily over the Black Lives Matter protests, the presence of antifa and coronavirus restrictions has taken a darker turn in recent weeks. Fueled by allegations of mail-in ballot fraud, shouted from the presidents Twitter feed and conservative media outlets, a new spate of racial justice protests in places like Philadelphia and paranoia over further coronavirus restrictions, some militias have begun doo
