A former US general compared back-and-forth fighting between Russia and Ukraine to a boxing match, as the war in the eastern European country nears the four-month mark.

"It's a heavyweight boxing match," Mark Hertling, the former top commander of the US Army forces in Europe, wrote in a Twitter thread late Monday night. "In 2 months of fighting, there has not yet been a knockout blow. It will come, as [Russian] forces become more depleted."

Hertling said fighting between the two sides in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region is like a "punch-counterpunch" fight, where artillery exchanges, counterattacks, and moving frontlines makes progress hard to come by.

"The Donbas fight has been a slugfest for over 2 months, so an expectation would be advancement on one side or the other," Hertling said. "That's not happened."

Hertling said that while both Russia and Ukraine continue to face casualties — hundreds of troops are reportedly killed every day — Ukraine can, for now, enjoy the advantage of greater "will and morale."

Ukraine has pleaded with Western countries to send more weapons deliveries after admitting it is outmatched by Russian artillery on the battlefield. Hertling said he expects Ukraine's resources to grow as the country obtains and benefits from new equipment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces pivoted their invasion to focus on eastern Ukraine after Russian forces failed to capture the capital city Kyiv in the weeks following the unprovoked late-February invasion.

The fight in eastern Ukraine has since become a slow-moving and bloody affair, with many — including NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg — predicting that the war could drag on for years.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is making a surprise visit to Ukraine to throw America’s weight behind ongoing war crimes trials against the Russian military, the Justice Department revealed Tuesday.

Ukraine has reportedly opened roughly 16,000 investigations into alleged war crimes by Russian troops since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February. Multiple nations and international organizations have also launched investigations into alleged Russian crimes.

“Attorney General Merrick Garland is making an unannounced visit to Ukraine today, where he will meet with Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova to discuss U.S. and international efforts to help Ukraine identify, apprehend, and prosecute those individuals involved in war crimes and other atrocities in Ukraine,” the official said.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) opened its largest investigation ever into alleged war crimes in late May.

RUSSIAN SOLDIER ON TRIAL FOR WAR CRIMES BEGS FOR ‘FORGIVENESS’

The ICC is working in a Join Investigation Team alongside Ukrainian, Polish and Lithuanian prosecutors. The European Union’s legal branch, Eurojust, is also participating in the effort.

The U.N. Human Rights Council also opened an inquiry into alleged Russian war crimes in mid-May.

BUCHA MASSACRE: GLOBAL OUTCRY AGAINST RUSSIA ESCALATES AS HORRIFYING STORIES EMERGE OF UKRAINE ATROCITIES

The HRC held a special session to address Ukraine’s allegations that Russian troops had committed atrocities against civilians during their withdrawal from areas surrounding Kyiv. The HRC voted 33-2 in favor of opening the inquiry, with 12 abstentions. China and Eritrea were the only nations to vote against the measure.

War crime allegations arose after the Russian withdrawal from around Kyiv revealed that Bucha, a town in the area, saw Russian troops kill as many as 400 citizens and force others to dig mass graves.

The U.S., U.K. and other NATO allies have denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin as a war criminal. President Joe Biden called for Putin to face a war crime trial in early April.

“This guy is brutal. What is happening in Bucha is outrageous and everyone has seen it – I think it is a war crime,” Biden said at the time, adding that the U.S. needs to “get all the detail, so this can be an actual war crime trial.”

The board of Twitter has unanimously recommended the takeover of the social media company by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. "The Twitter Board, after considering various factors described in the section of this proxy statement captioned "The Merger— Recommendation of the Twitter Board and Reasons for the Merger," has unanimously: (1) determined that the merger agreement is advisable and the merger and the other transactions contemplated by the merger agreement are fair to, advisable and in the best interests of Twitter and its stockholders and (2) adopted and approved the merger," said a Tuesday Securities and Exchange Commission filing by the company. In a Tuesday interview at the Qatar Economic Forum, Musk commented that one of the three "unresolved matters" that needed to be decided before the deal could happen was shareholder approval, Fox Business reported. He also noted that he was still waiting for an answer from Twitter on his question about the percent of fake accounts and spam on the social media platform. While Twitter has put the number at less than five percent, Musk has said he believes fake users contribute to at least 20 percent of accounts. The dispute led to Twitter agreeing earlier in the month to give Musk related data to satisfy his concerns. During the interview, Musk said that he wanted to make Twitter as appealing as possible to increase its users. "Ideally I"d like to get like 80 percent of North America and perhaps, I don"t know, half the world or something ultimately on Twitter in one form or another," he said. "And that means it must be something that is appealing to people. It obviously cannot be a place where people feel uncomfortable or harassed, or they"ll simply not use it." He added that his role at Twitter might not be as CEO but he would use his knowledge to push the technology, as in his role at his other companies. "Whether I"m called the CEO or something else is much less important than my ability to drive the product in the right direction," he said.
