Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticised proponents of Critical Race Theory Wednesday, declaring that “this is a conversation that has gone in the wrong direction.”
Appearing on The View, Rice, now the Director of the Hoover Institution, addressed CRT following the Biden administration’s apparent desire to punish parents who stand up against it being taught to their children in schools.
“If I could take a moment to talk about the whole issue of Critical Race Theory and what is, and is not being taught, I come out of an academic institution, and this is something that academics debate. What is the role of race and so forth?” Rice said.
She continued, “let me be very clear; I grew up in segregated, Birmingham, Alabama. I couldn’t go to a movie theater, or to a restaurant with my parents. I went to segregated schools till we moved to Denver. My parents never thought I was going to grow up in a world without prejudice, but they also told me, ‘That’s somebody else’s problem, not yours. You’re going to overcome it, and you are going to be anything you want to be.’ And that’s the message that I think we ought to be sending to kids.”
“One of the worries that I have about the way that we’re talking about race is that it either seems so big that somehow white people now have to feel guilty for everything that happened in the past,” Rice further emphasised.
“I don’t think that’s very productive,” she then declared, adding “Or black people have to feel disempowered by race. I would like black kids to be completely empowered, to know that they are beautiful in their blackness, but in order to do that, I don’t have to make white kids feel bad for being white. So somehow, this is a conversation that has gone in the wrong direction.”

Rice’s comments come in the wake of video emerging of a teacher at a high school in Ohio talking about books and themes closely associated with CRT, despite previous promises to parents from officials that it wasn’t happening in the district’s schools.

Ali Harbi Ali has been charged with the murder of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.
Matt Jukes of the Metropolitan Police said 25-year-old Ali has also been charged with the preparation of terrorist acts.
Sir David was stabbed to death on 15 October where he was meeting his constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

US stocks notched new highs on Wednesday as strong strong corporate earnings outweighed inflation and supply chain concerns.
The benchmark S&P 500 closed higher for the sixth straight session, buoyed by stronger than expected third-quarter earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average scaled new intraday highs, though failed to hit a closing record. The tech-heavy Nasdaq slipped, dragged by Netflix's outlook of decreased profitability.
A majority of companies that have reported earnings have beat analyst expectations so far. "Indeed, the selloff from September feels like an increasingly distant memory now," Deutsche Bank analysts said.
Here's where US indexes stood at the 4:00 p.m. ET close on Wednesday:
- S&P 500: 4,536.19, up 0.37%
- Dow Jones Industrial Average: 35,609.34, up 0.43% (152.03 points)
- Nasdaq Composite: 15,121.68, down 0.05%
Equities have been boosted by strong earnings reports, defying more muted expectations due to ongoing supply chain disruptions that have pushed prices of goods higher and the persistent labor shortages that have slowed the economic rebound.
"We believe that the stock market has more to climb in this bull market and that some of the COVID-19 headwinds are receding even as inflation increasingly becomes a headwind," Chris Zaccarelli, CIO at Independent Advisor Alliance, said in a Wednesday note. "Many companies continue to have pricing power, which should preserve corporate profits."
Fundstrat Global Advisors on Wednesday formally raised its S&P 500 year-end target to 4,800, representing potential upside of about 7% as risk-on sentiment increases.
"The improvement in market technicals, such as clearing the 50-day moving average, is actually suggesting that underlying trends are getting stronger," head of research Tom Lee said.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.648% - a level last seen in May - compared to Tuesday's 1.634%. Yields rise when bond prices fall.
In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin climbed to a record high of $66,909, a day after ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF had the second-biggest trading debut of all time.
If the bitcoin manages to see consecutive daily closes above former resistance at $65,000, Fairlead Strategies' Katie Stockton believes it will hit $89,800, representing potential upside of 38% from the breakout.
Ahead, asset management firm VanEck looks set next week to launch an ETF tied to bitcoin futures after October 23 on the Cboe BZX Exchange, according to a company filing Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 1.55%, to $84.25 per barrel. Brent crude, oil's international benchmark, tacked on 0.78%, to $85.74 per barrel.
Gold jumped as much as 0.88%, to $1,784.69 per ounce.

- The US government sold Wu-Tang Clan's one-of-a-kind album to a crypto collective called PleasrDAO.
- The album was sold as part of "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli's monetary judgment.
- PleasrDAO came into the spotlight previously after purchasing an NFT of the "doge" meme.
Wu-Tang Clan's one-of-a-kind album - once owned by Martin Shkreli - was bought by a crypto collective known as PleasrDAO for $4 million worth of a cryptocurrency, The New York Times first reported Wednesday.
The US government, which obtained the album as part of Shkreli's monetary judgment, sold it over the summer but didn't disclose its buyer, Insider previously reported. PleasrDAO has now come forward about the purchase.
"We bought the unreleased Wu-Tang album with crypto," the company said in a video on its blog.
The two-disk album, titled "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin," was sold in 2015 to Shkreli - the "Pharma Bro" who has since been convicted of securities fraud - for $2 million. There is only one copy in existence after it was recorded over a six-year period.
"This is like the OG NFT," Jamis Johnson, chief pleasing officer at PleasrDaO, said in the company's video. "The original fight against the middlemen who are rent-seeking. Crypto is the same ethos. Wu-Tang Clan was prescient in understanding that conflict."
PleasrDAO received the album on Sept. 10, according to The Times, and it now sits in a vault in New York City. The Times reported that the company paid $4 million in cryptocurrency to an intermediary, who then paid the government about $2 million US dollars.
An NFT of the album was made to represent ownership of the physical copy, The Times said, citing a lawyer who was involved in the transaction. Now, the 74 members of PleasrDAO have collective ownership of that NFT and the album.
PleasrDAO describes itself as a "collective of DeFi leaders, early NFT collectors, and digital artists who have built a formidable yet benevolent reputation for acquiring culturally significant pieces with a charitable twist."
The organization, whose abbreviation stands for "decentralized autonomous organization," came into the spotlight after purchasing a nonfungible token, or NFT, of the legendary "doge" meme, CNBC reported in September.
When first selling the album, Wu-Tang Clan stipulated it could be played for people at public events, but it couldn't be widely distributed until 2103, which is 88 years after it was sold, Stereogum reported.
PleasrDAO told the Times it has plans for the album to "be shared and ideally owned in part by fans and anyone in the world," though it didn't specify how it would do that while following the group's original conditions.

A House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection voted unanimously Tuesday to hold former White House aide Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress after the longtime ally of former President Donald Trump defied a subpoena for documents and testimony.
Still defending his supporters who broke into the Capitol that day, Trump has aggressively tried to block the committee’s work by directing Bannon and others not to answer questions in the probe. Trump has also filed a lawsuit to try to prevent Congress from obtaining former White House documents.
But lawmakers have made clear they will not back down as they gather facts and testimony about the attack involving Trump’s supporters that left dozens of police officers injured, sent lawmakers running for their lives and interrupted the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
The committee’s chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said Tuesday that Bannon “stands alone in his complete defiance of our subpoena” and the panel will not take no for an answer.
He said that while Bannon may be “willing to be a martyr to the disgraceful cause of whitewashing what happened on January 6th — of demonstrating his complete loyalty to the former President,” the contempt vote is a warning to other witnesses.
The Tuesday evening vote sends the contempt resolution to the full House, which is expected to vote on the measure Thursday. House approval would send the matter to the Justice Department, which would then decide whether to pursue criminal charges against Bannon.
The contempt resolution asserts that the former Trump aide and podcast host has no legal standing to rebuff the committee — even as Trump’s lawyer has argued that Bannon should not disclose information because it is protected by the privilege of the former president’s office. The committee noted that Bannon, fired from his White House job in 2017, was a private citizen when he spoke to Trump ahead of the attack. And Trump has not asserted any such executive privilege claims to the panel itself, lawmakers said.
Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, one of just two Republicans on the committee, said: “Mr. Bannon’s and Mr. Trump’s privilege arguments do appear to reveal one thing, however: They suggest that President Trump was personally involved in the planning and execution of January 6th. And we will get to the bottom of that.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation raided a Washington mansion linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska in a “court-authorized law enforcement activity” Tuesday.
Aluminum tycoon Deripaska and his companies were targeted by U.S. Treasury Department sanctions in 2018 over his ties to Vladimir Putin in response to Russia’s “malign activity around the globe.”
At the time, Deripaska was forced to relinquish control of United Co. Rusal International PJSC, the largest aluminum producer outside of China, in order to remove it from the sanctions list. Deripaska personally remains under the penalties.
“The FBI really is searching houses that are owned by Deripaska’s family members,” a spokeswoman for the tycoon said. “This is done based on two court orders linked to American sanctions. Those houses are in New York and Washington, but Oleg Deripaska doesn’t own them.”
Rusal shares closed down 5.7% to 79.18 rubles in Moscow, the largest drop since June.

The FBI is conducting “law enforcement activity” at Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska’s home in Washington, NBC News reported on Tuesday, citing a spokesperson for the US law enforcement agency.
Federal agents were outside the property and restricting access, NBC reporter Tom Winter wrote in a post on Twitter.
