This event kicks off Hindsight Up Front, the Wilson Center’s new Afghanistan initiative, featuring a discussion with Gen. David Petraeus and Sir John Scarlett, co-chairs of the Wilson Center’s Global Advisory Council and two of the world’s foremost public intellectuals. Their conversation—moderated by Wilson Center President, Director, and CEO Mark Green—focuses on the implications of the withdrawal for Afghanistan and the world.
They examine 20 years of U.S.-led war, consider what has and has not been achieved, and assess President Joe Biden’s withdrawal decision. They discuss the withdrawal’s potential impacts, including for terrorism risks and refugee flows. They weigh in on global reactions to the withdrawal—including from U.S. adversaries like China. They also offer insights on what U.S. policy should be in Afghanistan moving forward, and they detail what they would tell President Biden if he sought their advice.
Luchino Visconti emerges badly from this desperately sad documentary about the exploitation of his Death in Venice child star Björn Andrésen
This documentary tells us how the most beautiful boy in the world became its saddest man, his life damaged by the exploitative abuse that the movie business incidentally hands out to all those beautiful girls in the world without anyone caring or making documentaries about them.

A woman whose photograph of a naked man in pursuit of a wild boar at a Berlin lakeside went viral has said she might take legal action against a company that has immortalised the spectacle for model railway enthusiasts.
Adele Landauer, an actor and charisma coach, told German media she resented the fact that others were making money from her snapshot, which went around the world last August.

Roman Abramovich’s lawyer said it was defamatory to describe the businessman as having “a corrupt relationship” with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and that he had acted “covertly at his direction” in key business deals such as the purchase of Chelsea football club.
Speaking on the first morning of a preliminary hearing of a high court libel claim against a bestselling book about the modern Kremlin, Hugh Tomlinson QC said the 54-year-old billionaire said he did not “bring this claim lightly” and understood it could be characterised as “an attack on public interest journalism”.

Lawmakers on the congressional panel investigating the violent Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection described the hearing as an "historic" and "democracy-defending moment."
Tensions on Capitol Hill have only worsened since the insurrection, with many Republicans playing down, or outright denying, the violence that occurred and denouncing the Democratic-led investigation as politically motivated.
Democrats are reminding people how brutal it was, and how the law enforcement officers who were sworn to protect the Capitol suffered serious injuries at the hands of the rioters.
Republicans on the panel, Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, are defending their role.
"Almost every member of the Republican Conference understood in days immediately after January 6th what had actually happened, and many of them said so publicly. And the fact that so many members of our leadership, and others, the fact that they've gone from recognizing what happened on the sixth to protesting in front of the Justice Department on behalf of those who were part of the insurrection, is, is something that I can't explain," Cheney said, referring to a press conference held while the hearing was taking place questioning the treatment of those arrested for their role in the January 6th attack.
"I think it's a disgrace," she continued adding, "I know that this committee will be focused on getting to the truth of what happened in a non political non partisan way. This is not a political campaign. This is deadly serious and we'll investigate every aspect."
The chair of the committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, said the next hearing may happen next month.

President Joe Biden said he is weighing a requirement for federal workers to get vaccinated as the highly contagious delta variant spreads throughout the U.S.
A Covid-19 vaccine mandate for federal workers is “under consideration,” Biden told reporters on Tuesday after visiting the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in Virginia.
The president’s comments reflect the heightened concern among U.S. public health officials about the delta variant. He made the remarks after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tightened mask guidance, advising that fully vaccinated individuals cover their faces indoors in places where the virus is rapidly spreading.
