Latest updates: PM to make statement to MPs as defence review will lift cap on number of nuclear warheads
- China is major threat but UK will keep up trade links, says defence review
- Cap on Trident nuclear warhead stockpile to rise by more than 40%
12.29pm GMT
Boris Johnson is about to make his statement to MPs about the integrated defence, security and foreign policy review.
Here is our latest story about what it says, from my colleagues Patrick Wintour and Dan Sabbagh.
Related: China is major threat, but UK will keep up trade links, says defence review
12.26pm GMT
And here is some expert commentary on the integrated defence and security review.
From Shashank Joshi, defence editor at the Economist
Having read IR, three things jump out. 1) Euro-Atlantic is focus, Indo-Pacific tilt is modest. 2) language on China is measured, but it poses "systemic challenge...to our security, prosperity & values". 3) central theme of the review is not trade or military, but science & tech https://t.co/mCaxJCmq1c
As Jonathan says this new policy on UK nukes will complicate the calculations of potential adversaries. It will also complicate parliamentary and spending oversight in an area (the atomic weapons complex at Aldermaston) with a history of woeful performance & large overspends https://t.co/qfWdxJMd62
If the UK really is going to tilt from Europe to the Indo-Pacific, that reverses a policy shift made in the 1960s: well before Britain joined the EU. It's not clear Johnson understands why that decision was made, or the implications of reversing it. THREAD https://t.co/l7in6hsDwB
The Integrated Review is riddled with inconsistencies and contradictions. There is a yawning gap between this government's words and its action
Welcome INTEGRATED REVIEW today
- an ambitious new chapter for UK on the global stage.
Two concerns:
CHINA: still not seen as a geo-strategic threat but a competitive trading partner.

We now know where Alexei Navalny is -- and Navalny himself is describing it as "a real concentration camp." For days the exact location of the Kremlin critic has been a secret. Navalny - or his team - posted on Instagram and said he was inside a notorious penal colony, outside of Moscow.
The photo of him in the post is an old one -- but Navalny said his head had been shaved. He said inmates are under constant surveillance -- and that a prison guard wakes him up every hour at night.
Navalny is serving several years behind bars for violating parole terms while recovering in Germany from poisoning. World powers - including Germany - have demanded Navalny's release.

A rumbling political #crisis in #Belarus spilled over into the #Eurovision Song Contest this week, as the country's state broadcaster nominated a band that has released songs mocking protests against President Alexander Lukashenko. Featuring lyrics such as "I will teach you to toe the line," the entry has sparked a backlash from opposition figures and fueled calls by a European Parliament lawmaker for Belarus to be suspended from the popular competition.
