OTM Presents - The Experiment: The Loophole
This week, OTM presents the first episode of a new weekly show hosted by our WNYC colleague Julia Longoria: The Experiment.
When Mike Belderrain hunted down the biggest elk of his life, he didn’t know he’d stumbled into a “zone of death,” the remote home of a legal glitch that could short-circuit the Constitution—a place where, technically, you could get away with murder.
At a time when we’re surrounded by preventable deaths, The Experiment documents one journey to avert disaster.
• Mike Belderrain is a hunter and former outfitter in Montana.
• C. J. Box is the author of more than 20 novels, including Free Fire, a thriller set in Yellowstone National Park.
• Brian Kalt teaches law at Michigan State University. He wrote a 2005 research paper titled “The Perfect Crime.
• Ed Yong is a staff writer for The Atlantic.

The Economist Asks: Heather Cox Richardson
What does American history tell us about politics now? Anne McElvoy asks the professor at Boston College and author of the popular newsletter "Letters from an American". Using the sweep of history since the civil war, she brings a long view to febrile US politics and explains why she thinks the GOP is like a car driven into a deep ditch. Also her personal connection to the sea shanty—the nautical songs taking over social media.

Myanmar’s generals cut off social media
Myanmar’s military government has cut off Facebook and other social media amid growing opposition to its seizure of power and the arrest of the country’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi. We hear how important Facebook is to people in Myanmar.
Also on the programme: After hundreds of players and staff are forced to isolate days before the start of the Australian Open tennis tournament – how likely is it the event will go ahead? And why British scientists are mixing and matching Covid vaccines in a new trial.

Introducing: The Laverne Cox Show
Hey, You and Me Both fans! Since you love this podcast, we think you may like The Laverne Cox Show too. Check out the trailer and get episode 1 on February 4th!
About the Podcast: Years ago, a therapist said in our very first session that there are only two things that we can truly control in our lives - our own perception and our own behavior. That's it. Nothing more than that. Each week, The Laverne Cox Show will feature intimate conversations with folks who help me to see and think differently so that maybe I can act differently. It is my hope that this becomes a place that fosters perspectives that might inspire new behavior in each of us, which in turn gets us closer to becoming the very best versions of ourselves. Let's have a spiritual makeover together.

2/4: Republicans refuse to punish one of their own members. Challenges getting the vaccine to rural areas.
We are at a crucial moment right now in American politics, with the Republican party facing a stark choice about its future. At the center of the drama is Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who escaped any punishment yesterday at a closed-door GOP meeting over her extreme views, including endorsing political violence and anti-Semitic falsehoods. According to the CDC, more than 27 million Americans have now gotten at least one COVID vaccine shot. But some rural areas in Virginia are being left behind because of how the process is designed. The CDC says classrooms can re-open, even if teachers have not been vaccinated, as long as COVID protocols are met. San Francisco is actually suing their own school district to force re-openings. The Pentagon is taking drastic action to root out extremism in its ranks, ordering a military-wide "stand down" over the next 60 days for urgent discussions on the issue. A former Columbus, Ohio police officer is now charged with murder for killing a black man in December.
