Five-alarm inferno rips through pair of Dyker Heights homes, 12 firefighters hurt

A five-alarm fire tore through a pair of Dyker Heights homes late Saturday into early Sunday, injuring a dozen first responders, according to authorities.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out at 1330 74th St. at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Sept. 12. The blaze started out as a two-alarm tempest but quickly grew to a five-alarm inferno, spreading to the dwelling next door.

FDNY Chief Kevin Woods said more than 220 firefighters worked four hours into the overnight battling the blaze, finally bringing it under control at around 3:46 a.m. on Sept. 13.

Upon arrival we had heavy fire on three floors at 1330 74th St. and that fire extended to 1324 74th St., he told members of the press following the fire. There were six people in the original fire building and six in the building to the right all of those occupants have been accounted for at this time.

Twelve firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries, but no civilian injuries were reported, according to Chief Woods, who said responding units battled strong winds, an aged structure and overhead power lines that also caught fire.

The fire was on multiple floors in both buildings, so we needed the extra manpower, he said, adding that both Con Edison and the Department of Buildings were on the scene to address power issues and assess the stability of both buildings.

GoFundMe page has since been set up for resident Laura Gooner, who friends say woke up in the middle of the night to a fire that destroyed her home.

Gooner and her kittens are now left to pick up the pieces, wrote the fundraising campaigns organizer, Jenny Ward.

The funds I am trying to raise is to help offset the initial costs of getting back on her feet in the coming weeks and hopefully aid her further into recovering from this tragedy. Hotel, food, clothing, shoes, toiletries, pet care needs, expenses of relocating, etc., Ward wrote. Any amount would be greatly appreciated in this time of recovery and rebuilding her life.

The friend said Gooner is the first person to be there for anyone who needs her.

It is our time to step up when she needs us, she said.

Just hours after the blaze broke out, at about 10:30 a.m. Sept. 13, Wards GoFundMe had raised over $6,000 towards a $10,000 goal.

One of Gooners felines, a Siamese cat named Ophelia, was initially reported missing from the blaze. She was found safe and sound inside the house hours later.

Another GoFundMe has been created for residents Ed and Marianne OGrady, who escaped the blaze with only the clothes on their back. That online fundraiser has so far raised more than $10,000 towards a $15,000 goal as of Sunday morning. A third GoFundMe is also soliciting donations for Firefighter Piotr Orlowski.

FDNY marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Man shot dead in broad daylight outside Dyker Heights home

A 33-year-old man was shot dead in front of a home in Dyker Heights early Saturday afternoon, authorities reported.

Officers from the 68th Precinct found Arfan Butt, of 73rd Street in Bensonhurst, sitting inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, Butt had been inside the vehicle with two suspects who then got out of the car and began firing at Butt. Following the gunfire, sources said, a Mercedes-Benz pulled up to the location; the perpetrators hopped into that vehicle and fled the scene.

EMS rushed Butt to Maimonides Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Butt’s broad daylight killing comes just one week after 31-year-old Zaid Zindani was fatally shot in an almost identical manner. According to authorities, on Sept. 5, Zindani was shot in the face and neck as he sat behind the wheel of a Masarati on 63rd Street near 17th Avenue in Bensonhurst, within the confines of the 62nd Precinct.

The Dyker Heights shooting is also the second to occur in the 68th Precinct in one week. On Sunday, Sept. 7, 62-year-old Bay Ridge resident Michael Scully was gunned down while walking his dog by alleged shooter George Vayos after what law enforcement sources described as a long-standing rivalry.

Around the same time on Saturday, Sept. 12, another young man was shot and killed in a separate incident outside Fort Greene’s Ingersoll Houses. That investigation is also ongoing.

Ditmas Park public school shuts down after two staffers test positive for COVID-19

Another New York City public school will be temporarily shut down to COVID-19 just a day before remote learning is scheduled to begin.

P.S. 139 in Ditmas Park will be closed for 24 hours starting on Sept. 16 while the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the citys Test and Trace Corp investigate two potentially unrelated cases of the virus.

On Tuesday, the schools principal called the citys Situation Room to report a potentially COVID-19 positive staffer. Department of Education officials confirmed the case and are preparing to notify the school community in writing.

A staffer self-reported testing positive for COVID-19 to the Department of Education on Friday, Sept. 11, department officials confirmed.

Schools will be shut down if more than one staffer not connected by classroom or cohort tests positive for the virus within a seven day period, DOE policy dictates.

The school will be updated on the status of the cases and the schools closure by 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to DOE spokesperson Miranda Barbot.

On Monday, a number of parents protested outside P.S. 139 against the proposed reopening of the school during the ongoing pandemic. While remote learning begins on Sept. 16, public schools will reopen their doors to students on Sept. 21, with a blended model of in-classroom instruction and remote learning taking place during the school year.
